Massive Reported Contract for Franchise Centre

Keeping Auston Matthews in Toronto has been priority number one for the Maple Leafs all summer long — and if Carlo Colaiacovo is to be believed, it's finally gotten over the line.
While on the First Up show on TSN 1050, the former Leafs blueliner went so far as to say a deal for Matthews would be announced «any day now,» as it's essentially put to pen and paper.
»My understanding is that an Auston Matthews deal is going to happen any day right now. Nobody knows the exact date, but the expectation is that it's happening. It's going to be anywhere between 3-5 years and it's going to range between $13M and $14M, depending on the term. It's going to happen any day - that's the only thing I know that's going on in Leaf land."

What This Contract Would Mean for the Leafs

Obviously, $13 to 14 million AAV is not exactly chump change in a salary cap NHL, and Leafs fans would surely rather have seen him signed to a deal closer to eight years in term. The giant price tag may also make it harder to keep the team under the cap, but it's a signing the Leafs needed to make.
Not only is it the most important roster move the Leafs have been needing to make this offseason, inking Matthews would be a coup for new GM Brad Treliving personally, since he failed to keep either Matthew Tkachuk or Johnny Gaudreau from leaving the Calgary Flames last summer.
