The KHL officially terminated the contract of the Toronto Maple Leafs' prospect Nikita Grebyonkin.
A few days after winning the Gagarin Cup in the KHL with the Metallurg Magnitogorsk, Nikita Grebyonkin is one step closer to joining the Maple Leafs.
After three seasons in the KHL, the Leafs' 135th overall pick in 2022 has played his last game in Russia, and he could sign his entry-level contract in the NHL soon.
The KHL released an official statement about the defenseman:
Metallurg Magnitogorsk have terminated a contract with 20 y.o. forward Nikita Grebyonkin on mutual agreement.
Grebyonkin, 20, scored three goals and three assists in 20 playoff games, as well as 19 goals and 22 assists in 67 regular season games this year.
The 6-foot-1 winger could join the Leafs for the next season. However, don't be surprised if he's sent down to the AHL for his first year, to get acclimated to the North American system.
It's no secret that with all the trades in recent years, the Leafs' prospect pool isn't the best in the NHL. But with the addition of Grebyonkin and the 6'7" defenseman Cade Webber, the Leafs could have an interesting batch of new players to start the year.
Meanwhile, the focus remains on the playoffs as the Leafs prepare to face the Bruins for their fourth clash of the series, tonight, in Toronto.
