The Leafs forward was hustling to get back on the backcheck, skating through the neutral zone towards the Leafs end when Nicholas Robertson tried to give him a little help. The young winger tried to help Nylander get back into position quicker by giving him a slight push with the blade of his stick. Unfortunately though, the move backfired as Nylander immediately lost his balance and fell head first towards the ice, eventually colliding with Canadiens forward Christian Dvorak. Nylander's head appeared to hit Dvorak's knee as he fell, making the situation much worse than it could have been.
This was a split-second decision by Robertson, and it wasn't necessarily a terrible idea. Aft all, we have seen players pull off this exact same move before but in this case it simply did not work out. Leafs coach Craig Berube may be impressed with the creativity, but he likely won't be happy with this situation. Since it is just pre-season such a move is not necessary at all, and now it appears to have done much more harm than good.
Following the play, Nylander got off the ice and immediately went down the tunnel towards the Leafs' locker room. Hopefully this is just precautionary, but there is certainly opportunity for Nylander to have a concussion, if not a worse injury as a result of this play.
The Leafs have yet to comment on Nylander's condition. Be sure to stay tuned for updates as this story evolves tonight.
