The play came late in the first period of the pre-season game between the rival clubs. Blackhawks prospect AJ Spellacy, a 3rd round draft pick in the 2024 draft, made a hit on Red Wings forward Lukas Raymond on the shift, which Larkin clearly took exception to. As a result, he appeared to target the 18-year-old, going after him when he was vulnerable. Spellacy was entering the Red Wings zone with the puck on his stick when he appeared to lose his footing just as Larkin was going in for the hit. This resulted in the Red Wings captain hitting the Blackhawks rookie up high, and he immediately reached for his face. Naturally, this resulted in a scrum involving just about everyone on the ice.
Larkin was called for a minor penalty for interference on the play. The veteran forward may have gotten away with one as it appeared to be much worse than that. However, since Spellacy appeared to be going down just before the hit was made, this could have been a legitimate accident, and just really unfortunate timing.
Luckily, Spellacy did not appear to be serious injured on the play as he immediately popped back up and joined in on the ensuing scrum. He recorded 21 goals and 38 points in 67 games last season for the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL. He is certainly still a ways away from making the NHL, but clearly he has shown something to still be with the team this late into training camp and pre-season. At 6'3" 190 pounds, he is already a physical force to be reckoned with so this will likely not be the last incident that he is involved in. Will Larkin face any supplementary discipline for the hit though? That much remains to be seen.
