After just two pre-season games, the Toronto Maple Leafs roster is seemingly taking shape, with reporter David Alter revealing the three training camp groups for the organization that tells us much about their thought process moving towards the regular season.
In group one, you see the roster that the team will more than likely take into the regular season, with very few surprises beyond Marshall Rifai, a defenseman that made his NHL debut last season and has impressed many in training camp. With off-season pickups Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson alongside Jake McCabe, Morgan Rielly, Simon Benoit and Timothy Liljegren, this shows he will likely work as the teams seventh d-man heading into 2024/25, a major step up for a talented young name that was recently extended by Toronto.
One name that's intriguingly missing from that group however is Easton Cowan, who hasn't been at his best in the pre-season, and with an xGF% of just 11%, the lowest of any forward in the pre-season, it's likely that he will not make the opening night roster unless an injury strikes.
While Cowan was expected to push for an NHL spot early in the year, it's not a complete shock that a 19-year old hasn't pushed out veterans to find his role in the league, and with time and patience, the belief is still that he'll be a star in the league one day.
