This week, Auston Matthews left the ice early during a practice that had fans holding their breath and has subsequently missed a few practices which is always sure to raise a degree of concern from the team as well. According to TSN's Mark Masters and Chris Johnston, apparently, there's no major reason to worry just yet. It seems it's more about maintenance than anything else that has been keeping Matthews out.
Word is that Matthews is working through some minor "bumps and bruises", normal for a player getting back into the rigors of training camp. It's the leap from summer work to high-contact drills, that tests even the highest-end athletes, and Matthews isn't an exception. At this juncture, there's no indication this is a long-term problem.
Although this is still up in the air, as it relates to Thursday's preseason game, it is more about how he feels closer to game time. With the team not fully ruling him out, he can still see some action. If he does not play, however, it isn't exactly time for full-blown panic.
There are a couple of preseason games left that should give Matthews ample time to get himself right and back into some game shape prior to the regular season getting underway. The Leafs appear prepared in case of a minor absence as they've shuffled players around into their practice rotation to illustrate a plan should Matthews not be 100% moving forward.
While Auston Matthews missing practice may cause a degree of anxiety, this appears to be no more than the usual grind that goes on during training camp. One can expect him back onto the ice in due time, and there's no indication this might affect his availability to start the regular season.
