The insider Elliotte Friedman revealed what teams would need to pay in order to get Jake Guentzel's signing rights from the Carolina Hurricanes.
By acquiring Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier this season, the Canes paid a hefty price for him: Michael Bunting, three prospects, and two conditional draft picks. However, they did not only get his services on the ice but also his signing rights.
If a team is interested in signing Guentzel before the free agent market opens on July 1st, they'll need to trade for him.
According to Friedman, the Hurricanes would be looking to get a mid-round pick in return:
"On Jake Guentzel: Elliotte says 'It sounds like he is available for a mid-round pick.'" #CauseChaos #NHL"
One of the teams rumored to be interested in Guentzel, the Chicago Blackhawks, has all it takes to get him. They have enough cap space to sign him, and six draft picks between the second and the sixth rounds.
The Hawks could greatly benefit from a guy like Guentzel. He played a long time on Sidney Crosby's line, getting valuable experience that could be useful with Connor Bedard.
Parting ways with one of their draft picks wouldn't be a big sacrifice to land Guentzel's signing rights.
Do you think the Carolina Hurricanes will trade Jake Guentzel before the draft?
