Big news from Toronto today – the Maple Leafs have officially parted ways with head coach Sheldon Keefe after his five-year stint with the team.

General manager Brad Treliving shared the decision in a statement, and stressed the need for a fresh perspective to steer the team forward.
Leafs GM Treliving: Today's decision was difficult. Sheldon is an excellent coach and a great man; however, we determined a new voice is needed to help the team push through to reach our ultimate goal. We thank Sheldon for his hard work and dedication to the organization over the last nine years, and wish him and his family all the very best.
The decision follows the Leafs' playoff disappointment against the Boston Bruins, was the Leafs seventh first round exit in eight seasons and fourth in Keefe's tenure. Falling short of advancing to the second round prompted the organization to seek a new direction.
However, Keefe's proven abilities and experience in coaching, especially in a demanding market like Toronto, should position him well for future opportunities in the league.
Sheldon Keefe seems like the quintessential coach to take the metric ton of very hard lessons he learned during his first stint behind an NHL bench and turn them a run of wild success wherever his next stop may be.
