With Stanley Cup ambitions in Toronto this season, it's safe to say that the team will need to be very good from the moment this season begins, but in the pre-season opener, the team were anything but. While they struggled to get shots on net early, the offense turned things around, netting five goals on the night, but with six scored by the rival Senators in a 6-5 defeat for Toronto, new Head Coach Craig Berube was already showing signs of frustration.
After the game, he was highly critical of his squad, and given that the front office brought him in to be a no-nonsense type of coach, it's safe to say that's exactly what they are getting.
Sure, it's just one game and the chemistry and conditioning will no doubt improve in the weeks before the regular season arrives, the small things seem to be what's weighing on the mind of Berube. With Auston Matthews now the captain, it lays on him to help get this team in regular season form for the opener on October 12, with the team needing to make many massive lineup decisions before that point.
Fans may not take to Berube quick, as he is often going to be very harsh and critical and say what's on his mind, but after the previous regime, it's exactly what this team needs, so we will now wait and see how the team respond for pre-season game two as they look to get regular season ready ahead of one of the most important seasons in franchise history.
