While the Toronto Maple Leafs have always been top heavy, they've added to their depth significantly this off-season, and in training camp thus far, it's increased the level of competition in a big way. Through a few days, there has been some major standouts, which were identified by captain Auston Matthews, who first singled out defenseman Marshall Rifai.
That's exactly the type of competition the Maple Leafs need in training camp on the blue line, and the other player he singled out was an emerging star at the NHL from a year ago in winger Bobby McMann, who could potentially take up a permanent role on the second line this season.
Last season, McMann was one of the surprises of the Maple Leafs year, who tallied 15 goals in 56 games, and now with 66 games played at the top level, he appears to be settling in and becoming more and more confident as time goes on.
This should be very encouraging for new Head Coach Craig Berube, who had the big name talent to work with, but it's the younger players on cheaper deals that could end up changing their fortunes in the upcoming campaign. Right now, they have plenty of potential options in the forward group, and if their young names keep stepping up and impressing, we could see many different groups in 2024/25.
