But with a deep lineup and limited cap space, it's clear GM Brad Treliving doesn't have much to work with. Yet, it won't stop him from trying. According to Dave Pagnotta from The Fourth Period, the Leafs are already working the phones, and two names are on the trade market: Nick Robertson and Conor Timmins.
Robertson just signed a one-year deal, but that might've been done to make a trade easier. After all, he did request a trade back in June, and it's no secret that he's been seeking a fresh start.
Timmins, with his $1.1M cap hit, has also been in the rumor mill for a while now. With the recent signing of Jani Hakanpää, the Leafs' blue line just got a more crowded, and it's no secret that Toronto is feeling the salary cap squeeze. It's possible the 25 year-old will be the odd man out.
Clearing up space is key for the Leafs right now, and moving one or both of them could give the team more flexibility.
As training camp progresses, it'll be interesting to see where these two end up fitting in. Robertson and Timmins could either be valuable pieces in coach Craig Berube's lineup or used as trade bait. All we know is, with the Leafs, there's never a dull moment, and these decisions could play a big role in how the season unfolds.
