Referees fell for Brad Marchand's antics in game two of the series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins.
During the game, the referees handed a two-minute penalty to Tyler Bertuzzi after he slashed Brad Marchand on the back of his knee. The call caused quite a stir as Marchand was clearly embellishing to get the refs' attention.
Marchand got hit and rolled on the ice like he had broken his leg, but got right back up a few seconds later to get involved in a scrum.
While Bertuzzi did slash him where players are less protected, there's no chance that Marchand was hurt at this point. He just wanted to attract the penalty call, which worket out well for him in the end.
On X, many hockey fans shared their thoughts on Marchand's reaction, notably comparing him to Ottawa Senators' Tim Stutzle, one of the most renowned divers in the League.
"Brad Stutzle over here"
"Always cries wolf. Couldn't expect anything less from him."
"Is he a soccer player"
"Marchand deserves an embellishment penalty on that play. That wasn't a serious slash by Bertuzzi.
And I am definitely not a Leafs fan."
Even if the Leafs managed the win the game, fans are calling out Marchand and the referees for this obvious overreaction.
Do you think Bertuzzi deserved a penalty for slashing Marchand?
