The Toronto Maple Leafs once again failed to make it beyond the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and after five years behind the bench, this resulted in the dismissal of Sheldon Keefe. Even while the playoffs were ongoing, the Maple Leafs links to Craig Berube weren't hidden, and now, after weeks of interviews, the team have officially announced Berube as the next Head Coach of the storied franchise.
While the team have lacked playoff success, they certainly have the talent to go on a deep run, as Berube is walking into a team that boasts star quality players such as
Auston Matthews and
William Nylander. As the coach of the St. Louis Blues, Berube never had such elite forwards to lead the group, but he still took them to a shocking Stanley Cup win, while also making the playoffs in four of his six years behind the bench.
In six years with the Blues, Berube put together a 382-206-132 record, all while leading St. Louis to a Stanley Cup, and it's the results and the personality that fit this Maple Leafs organization perfectly. After so much failure, the Maple Leafs seem confident that Berube is the type of coach this team needs, and with many changes expected to this roster, it's safe to say that if any coach can take this team deep in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it's veteran Craig Berube.
