The 6'4" goaltender currently plays for Krasnaya Armiya Moskva, the junior team associated with CSKA Moscow in the KHL. He has spent the past three seasons with the organization, although he's only gotten into 23 games with the team in that span. He also appeared in a single game for Zvezda Moskva of the VHL in the 2022-23 season, presumably as an emergency goalie as he got lit up without making a single save.
Last season he appeared in 16 games for the team, going 7-7-0 with a .921 save percentage and a 2.96 goals-against-average. He also got into two playoff games and put up a .908 save percentage while going 0-2.
This year, it appears as though the 19-year-old will return to the MHL, where he is expected to spend the entire season with Krasnaya Armiya. So far through four pre-season games, he has allowed just six goals total, only four of which were in regulation.
Granted, the MHL is a league known for low-scoring compared to other junior leagues. Furthermore, the league is also known for huge differences in quality between the teams. The teams on top are often very very good while the teams on the bottom don't look like they even belong in the same league. Pre-season contests are even less indicative of the quality one should expect from the league. So should these numbers be taken very seriously? Perhaps not, but regardless, this is a good sign that Obvintsev could turn into an NHL goalie one day. Obviously, the Leafs saw something in him. Now it is his turn to create his own destiny.
