The Toronto Maple Leafs and GM Brad Treliving have been seeking to bolster their blueline this offseason, and a recent trade proposal could add a solid defenseman to the mix.

The trade would bring Jake Middleton to the Leafs while sending out Nick Robertson, a former first-round pick in Timothy Liljegren, and a draft pick. Middleton, who's entering the final year of his $7.35 million deal, recently signed a four-year extension worth $17.4 million through the 2028-29 season. At 28, he would be expected to step into a top-four role and strengthen the Leafs' blue line.
Middleton had 7 goals and 25 points in 80 games last season. Over his NHL career, he's played 239 games, recording 14 goals and 43 assists for 57 points.
In return, the Wild would get Robertson, who is a restricted free agent and requested a trade from Toronto. Robertson hasn't found a major role in blue and white, but in Minnesota, he could slot into a middle-six forward position.
It's also possible Timothy Liljegren could be a solid addition to the state of hockey's defense, bringing youth to their lineup. At 25 years old, he has the potential to step right into Middleton's spot on the blue line. Liljegren was a first-round pick in the 2017 National Hockey League Draft and has played 196 games so far, notching 14 goals and 51 assists for 65 points. His arrival could inject some fresh energy into Minnesota's blueline.
