The Blue Jackets and Hurricanes are looking to move some key pieces via trade this off-season, and now it appears the two sides could help each other out.
This off-season has been absolutely chaotic, with blockbuster trades and shocking moves taking centre stage for the NHL, and now there may be another potential blockbuster brewing. With both the Carolina Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets looking to move key pieces of their lineup, one trade has now suggested that both parties could help each other out.
"The rumored trade package would see the Hurricanes send forward Martin Necas to Columbus. Necas, a former 12th overall pick, possesses immense potential with his speed and playmaking abilities. However, he hasn't quite lived up to expectations in Carolina, making him an expendable asset in a potential blockbuster deal."
On paper it would make sense for both sides, as the Hurricanes get a fantastic goal scorer that can help them win now, while the Blue Jackets get a potentially huge piece of their future as they continue their rebuild. Unfortunately, no progress can be made on a trade at this point in time, as Don Waddell explains the current situation with Laine in the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program.
"Teams keep checking in to see if there's anything new,» Waddell said. «I tell them, ‘You guys have to be comfortable with [Laine], and I can't help you.' I don't know the player personally. I'm not one to try and trick people either, so [we] made him available to chat [when he's cleared].»
It's a matter of when, not if Laine and Necas moved this off-season, and while many parties are interested, a deal that swaps both with other assets included makes plenty of sense.
