The Chicago Blackhawks have officially named Nick Foligno their team captain, making him the 35th in franchise history and the first to take over the mantle since Jonathan Toews, who had it from 2008 to 2023.
Foligno is a 17-year veteran in the NHL who is due to start his second season with the Blackhawks after being moved in a trade from the Boston Bruins. At 36 years old, he was named an alternate captain ahead of the 2023-24 season. In his first season with Chicago, he recorded 37 points, through 17 goals, and 20 assists, in 74 games. Foligno ended the season tied for first in power-play goals with eight and ranked third in overall points with 37, fourth in assists with 20, and tied for fourth in goals with 17.
The Buffalo, New York native was drafted 28th overall by the Ottawa Senators back in 2006 and has tallied an impressive 562 points in 1,155 regular-season games. He has stopped with the Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, and Chicago Blackhawks throughout his career. He also served as captain of the Blue Jackets from 2015 through 2021 and led the team to four consecutive playoff appearances from 2016 through 2020.
The following season with Columbus, Nick Foligno picked up both the Mark Messier Leadership Award for his on-ice and in-community leadership and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for his humanitarian work along with his leadership on and off the rink.
