Meredith Gaudreau, wife of the late Johnny Gaudreau, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, revealing how challenging this time of year has become for her and the Gaudreau family after the tragic deaths of Matthew, 29, and Johnny, 31, who were struck by drunk driver Sean Higgins on August 29th.
She opened up about how she used to help Johnny prepare for the season, and now, the absence of her husband is deeply felt.
That same sentiment is shared by NHL veteran and Johnny's best friend Sean Monahan .
The two played together with the Calgary Flames for nine years and were linemates. They proposed to their wives a day after each other and lived down the road from each other in Calgary.
They were like brothers and Meredith made it clear that she and her family would be rooting for Monahan as he gears up for the season.
The touching message shows the bond between families but also displays the heartbreaking realization that Monahan and Gaudreau won't get to reunite as Columbus Blue Jackets after Sean signed there in free agency.
Monahan, who's been open about his friendship with Johnny, and even carried his casket in the funeral has expressed his intent to honor that connection this season.
Reports even surfaced that Monahan will be sitting next to Gaudreau's stall in the locker room.
Every game this season will carry extra meaning, with both Jackets staff and fans honoring Johnny's and Matthew's legacy together.
