Leon Draisaitl's contract decision is a major storyline hanging over the Edmonton Oilers, and now an insider reveals how big his contract must be.
For months now, the Leon Draisaitl contract talks have been the most talked about topic in Edmonton, and after being so close to winning the Stanley Cup Finals, it's clear that they want him to be there to help them take the final step. Now, renowned Oilers insider Jim Matheson has revealed what it will take to lock up Draisaitl in free agency, and it's safe to say that he expects to be one of the highest paid players in the league.
If Oilers offer to Draisaitl starts with a 13, this deal is getting done, and maybe soon. I suspect he'll sign for about $13.5m a year. All this talk about him wanting to be top dog somewhere else? Why? The Oilers are closer to Cup than just about any other contender.
It's unclear yet what the Oilers intentions are, as they clearly want him back in Edmonton, but with Connor McDavid's pending free agency in the year of 2026, they will need the cap space to likely pay him $14 million AAV or more. If the Oilers come to Draisaitl with $13.5 on a long-term deal, it's safe to say that he would jump at the opportunity, and with Stan Bowman now taking over as General Manager, discussions could heat up.
Given that this may be his biggest opportunity to secure a lucrative deal, there's also still a chance that Draisaitl may want to test free agency, but for now, all signs point to a deal worth $13.5 million or more.
