The future of Leon Draisaitl was potentially up in the air this summer, but now he has opened up after ending the speculation and committing long-term to the Oilers.
After years of tremendous production, it became obvious that the $8.5 million AAV for Leon Draisaitl's contract was one of the biggest steals in the NHL, and with him being eligible for an extension this summer, he was always in line for a huge pay raise. That officially came on Thursday, with the team announcing an eight-year extension for No. 29 that will pay him $14 million annually, making him the highest paid player in the NHL on an annual basis.
While it's the richest deal in NHL history, it feels appropriate given what he's meant to this team, and those feelings are clearly reciprocated, as Draisaitl has now opened up on his new deal, revealing his desires to be an Edmonton Oiler for life with this contract.
I'm really happy and excited to hopefully be an Oiler for life
In Draisaitl's last five full seasons (shortened Covid year excluded), Draisaitl has averaged 112 points per campaign while tallying well over a point per game in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the past three seasons, and if he is an Edmonton Oiler for life alongside Connor McDavid, it's safe to say that they'll be a team that experiences plenty of success in the coming years.
