The New York Rangers almost got their wish. They were looking for a team to take on the $8.5 million cap hit attributed to captain and defenseman Jacob Trouba.
Yet while they found a partner in the desperate Buffalo Sabres, it didn't matter, for as his right, the veteran refused to waive his no trade clause.
It's believed the trade also involved Blueshirts winger Kaapo Kakko and his $2.4 million cap hit, who Buffalo GM Kevin Adams remains still desires, as the organization seeks to end their 13 year playoff drought.
#Sabres and #NYR had actually worked up a deal for Kaapo Kakko and Jacob Trouba before everything went south. Was looking like the Rangers were going to clear some significant space.
Buffalo is still interested in Kakko at this time.
New York GM Chris Drury wants to fee up space and move the declining Trouba, who also stopped a trade to the Detroit Red Wings. He probably will only accept going to a championship contender.
This is a legitimate possibility at this point. If the #NYR cant move Trouba somewhere other than #Sabres or #LGRW, a buyout is very possible. It's going to be an ugly scene at MSG if the fans boo the captain due to this whole situation, so Drury has some work to do.
However, it's unlikely any team currently with Stanley Cup aspirations will accept his paycheck.
For now, Trouba will stay on the Rangers' third-pair with Zac Jones for at least another season unless something changes.
