The Ottawa Senators and the National Capital Commission are making significant progress on what could be a historic agreement for the future of a downtown arena located at LeBreton Flats.

With a looming deadline approaching, the two sides are still yet to agree on a lease for a piece of land located 10 minutes west of Parliament Hill. This land is well-placed to accommodate Senators new relocation. Source told the Ottawa Citizen on Sunday that they are confident that the two sides will get the paperwork in place.

The source did set caution that if the agreement gets signed there are several hurdles before the dream of building a new rink becomes reality.

"They (the Senators) are very likely to go to the next step with the NCC, but that is just the next step," the source said. "There are still many steps ahead before anything is even close to final."

This comes on the heels of Michael Andlauer telling the Citizen in an interview last Wednesday he believes that the Senators will get a lease deal in place with the NCC.

"There's been some roadblocks along the way," said Andlauer, who will celebrate his one-year anniversary as the club's owner Saturday. "I think there's willingness, that's the thing, so I think we'll get there."

"We're working hard and the NCC has no problem getting together after hours," Andlauer said. "It hasn't been as easy as I thought, but it's the nicest piece of land out there.

"There's definitely a willingness from the NCC (to make a deal)."

With all this work on securing a proper arena and trying to bring the team Back into the City of Ottawa has been what Andlauer has been working towards. With that being said, Andlauer isn't asking for a free rink and is willing to pay his share for a new home for the Senators.

"This cannot happen without public support," he said. "I'm fully going to do my part. It's not like I feel like I'm privileged and I'm sitting there saying, ‘Do you know who I am? I'm the Ottawa Senators and therefore I should be getting (this all paid for)."

"(No, no) this is about what the fans want. As I said at my beginning press conference (last September), I'm just holding the torch for a period of time, hopefully a long time, of this hockey club and I just want to do what's right for our fans."
