We're slowly starting to see which players have stepped up their game this season. The emergence of some unexpected talents and injuries has left the Maple Leafs with more available salary cap space for potential trades.
Maple Leafs Benefit from Unexpected Contributions
This season, some of the Toronto Maple Leafs' most valuable contributors are players who weren't initially expected to have a significant impact.
At the blue line, Timothy Liljegren is finally realizing the potential he has shown for some time. Connor Timmins has exceeded expectations with his strong performance, and Jake McCabe has found a resurgence in his career, performing exceptionally well in a larger role than initially planned.
Among the forwards, both Noah Gregor and Nick Robertson have stepped up significantly. Gregor, a training camp invitee, has earned his place on the team and continues to demonstrate his value. Robertson, much like Liljegren, is displaying flashes of the potential that made him a top prospect. Matthew Knies also made an impact this season.
The emergence of these players has made other individuals on the team potentially expendable.
Maple Leafs Poised to Create Room for Multiple Star Acquisitions Through Creative Cap Management
The Toronto Maple Leafs have the opportunity to create a lot of cap space before the deadline arrives.
The team has already placed John Klingberg on LTIR due to his season-ending injury, freeing up additional cap space. If Ryan Reaves also remains sidelined, this would give Treliving an additional $1.3 million.
The Leafs could also get money from the goaltender department. With Woll and Jones' emergence, trading Ilya Samsonov would open up another $3,55 millions.
Finally, the other player who could leave is TJ Brodie. He's been having a tough time this season. If Treliving can manage to trade him away, the Leafs would have $5 million more in space.
With all that money, he could get one or two elite players to help reaching deep playoff rounds this season.
