Last night NHL insider Elliotte Friedman joined the Sportsnet crew to talk about various news items heading into the holiday break. During this time Friedman spoke about the Toronto Maple Leafs' plans to explore a trade when the roster freeze ends.
Insider Report Confirms Maple Leafs Trade Plans
Last night while on Sportsnet Elliotte Friedman dropped a bombshell about what the Maple Leafs are looking for most on the trade market. Friedman believes the Maple Leafs' biggest need they are looking to fill at the moment is goaltending.
"The Leafs have dipped their toes in the goaltending market," reported Friedman on the Saturday Headline
With Joseph Woll out with an injury for a significant period, the Maple Leafs have been relying on Ilya Samsonov and Martin Jones. To this point, the pair have not been playing up to the team's standards. This has led to major calls for an upgrade.
Insider Reveals What The Maple Leafs Would Prefer To Do With Their Goaltending
While talking about this topic Elliotte Friedman continued and said that the preferred option for the Maple Leafs is not a trade. As of now, the Maple Leafs are hoping this break gives Ilya Samsonov time to reset and get back focused on being the guy again.
If Samsonov struggles even after the break then might be the time for trade talks to pick up a lot more. Many Maple Leafs fans have wanted to give Dennis Hildeby a chance. However, Friedman believes the Maple Leafs would prefer to take their time with his development path to the NHL.
This means that the future trades and moves the Maple Leafs make all hinge on the play of Ilya Samsonov. If he does well the Maple Leafs will address other areas. If he struggles the Maple Leafs could be forced to overpay for goaltending.
