Last night after the Toronto Maple Leafs' loss to the Boston Bruins Auston Matthews faced the media. During his time taking questions, he talked about the disappointment of another series loss, his injury, and his teammates.
Auston Matthews struggled through the first round series against the Boston Bruins. Dealing with a mystery injury and immense outside pressure to produce Auston Matthews and his teammates came up short. After their elimination Auston Matthews spoke about the disappointment of losing once again.
"I think that's pretty self-explanatory," said Matthews. "It's obviously tough."
Despite the disappointment of a loss, Auston Matthews made sure to compliment his teammates for their efforts. Despite the adversity the team faced and the underwhelming result Auston Matthews is still proud of the group.
"I'm really proud of the guys who battled back and hung in there being down 3-1," said Matthews. "I don't think there was any doubt that we could get to this point and climb our way back in the series. It was really hard to watch those two games but I'm just really proud of the guys to fight and battle back and give ourselves a chance."
As the questions continued Auston Matthews was eventually asked about the injury that kept him out for games 5 and 6. When asked Auston Matthews declined to comment for the time being on the exact injury.
"I'm not gonna get into that tonight," admitted Matthews.
This answers some questions but leads to plenty more about the Toronto Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews' future.
"This is as tight of a group as I've been a part of here," began Matthews. "I feel like we say that every year."
Eventually reports will likely reveal the injury that Auston Matthews was dealing with. Then it will be time to move on to the offseason and make improvements to the roster to try and get past that threshold once again.
