Although rumors about a Markstrom move to New Jersey have been swirling for months, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Devils had to fend off several other teams to secure the 34 year-old Swedish goaltender.
According to Friedman, Markstrom, who has two years of $6 million per season left on his deal and a no-trade clause, gave the Flames permission to widen their search for a trade partner. Friedman also noted that both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators came up short in their offers for Markstrom.
While we don't know exactly what Leafs GM Brad Treliving put on the table, it's clear it wasn't enough to beat the Devils' offer. It's a missed opportunity, as the cost of a high draft pick and a depth defenseman could've turned into the Leafs addressing their issues between the pipes.
