Yesterday, the Calgary Flames traded veteran goalie Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils for a 1st-round pick and defenseman Kevin Bahl.

Although rumors about a Markstrom move to New Jersey have been swirling for months, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Devils had to fend off several other teams to secure the 34 year-old Swedish goaltender.
Markström had allowed the Flames to expand the search a bit and I think a few teams were in on it. I think Toronto was one, I think Ottawa was one..."

@FriedgeHNIC goes behind the scenes of the Jacob Markström trade with @JeffMarek. #Flames  #NJDevils
According to Friedman, Markstrom, who has two years of $6 million per season left on his deal and a no-trade clause, gave the Flames permission to widen their search for a trade partner. Friedman also noted that both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators came up short in their offers for Markstrom.
Devils just got Markstrom for two years at $4.125m for a 1st in 2025 (top 10 protected) and a former 2nd dr pick, LHD with 148 NHL games.

Did Leafs not having a 1st next yr eliminate them from getting in on Markstrom?

Who traded away that 2025 1st round pick?
While we don't know exactly what Leafs GM Brad Treliving put on the table, it's clear it wasn't enough to beat the Devils' offer. It's a missed opportunity, as the cost of a high draft pick and a depth defenseman could've turned into the Leafs addressing their issues between the pipes.
