The Toronto Maple Leafs had some big needs ahead of the deadline, but time and time again we heard that they weren't willing to move top assets, and that come true this past week.

Brad Treliving opens up on the trade deadline process for the Maple Leafs

While Toronto added some solid veterans on the blue line, they never came close to any of the top available assets, with many Maple Leafs fans labelling the work from Treliving as a massive failure.
When asked about the process and how close the team came to making some big moves, the Maple Leafs GM didn't surprise anyone with his answers.
"He's a heck of a player & there was no thought of moving Easton," said Treliving before discussing how close he was to moving his 2024 first-round pick was. "I just didn't feel it was something that made sense for us for the very short term. So, it's good to have that asset here."
Sure, this allows the team to keep a first-round pick this year along with Easton Cowan, Matthew Knies and Fraser Minten going forward, but with the team looking to compete for a Stanley Cup, this just wasn't enough.
This isn't the first time we've seen Treliving struggle to make the right, big moves at the trade deadline, and while Toronto still have one of the most stacked forward groups in the NHL, it's not hard to imagine this lack of aggressiveness catching up with them when the playoffs roll around.
