The Toronto Maple Leafs team is stacked full of superstars, but to compliment them, the team needs depth, and after some players have failed to live up to expectations, they may be looking into some big time changes.

A former first-round pick could be joining the team on a brand new contract

We've already seen the Edmonton Oilers PTO of Sam Gagner pay off, and now, the same appears to be happening in Toronto, as former first-round pick Kieffer Bellows is on the verge of getting a new NHL contract with the Maple Leafs.
A few weeks ago, the team gave Bellows a PTO with the AHL's Toronto Marlies, and through five games, he's impressed the team with 4 goals and 7 points, and he's now about to be rewarded.

Untapped talent could be given a big chance with the Maple Leafs

With the likes of Ryan Reaves and others failing to solidify their spots, Bellows, who was picked just 18 spots after Auston Matthews in the 2016 NHL Draft could be taking their spot any day now.
When asked by Mark Masters what the Leafs higher ups told him when he was given the AHL PTO, this is what the 25-year old forward had to say.
"They just wanted me to come in on a tryout and just show what I can do, and that's what I want to do. I want to show I can earn an NHL contract. That's my goal. While doing that, obviously that's a personal goal, I also want to help this team win games and put in a good run, however long it takes, however long I'm here, whatever the situation is - I want to help this team go on a winning streak to help them benefit in the longer run as well."

It's not guaranteed yet, but it's clear that he's still got the drive and the talent to be a success, so it appears to be just a matter of time until we see him in the NHL for his third team.
