Insider projects Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi's future contracts

Brad Treliving is heading into his second offseason as the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. With his choice for head coach Craig Berube taking over his vision for the team can truly be put in place. This calls into question the future of two of his additions from his first offseason Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi.

Both players were a bit disappointing this season compared to the lofty expectations many fans had. They were supposed to be potential key top six pieces but both ended up more as good depth. Today Frank Seravalli looked at what each player might command on the free agent market.

For Tyler Bertuzzi, this would be a slight pay cut but still keep him over 5 million dollars per season. The contract would also connect him to Toronto through his age-33 season. Tyler Bertuzzi does bring the preferred play style and toughness that both Brad Treliving and Craig Berube seem to prefer. For a player that amassed just 43 points this season an extension with that much term might be too much risk.

In the case of Max Domi, his extension would also provide half of a million-dollar pay raise. His cap hit however would stay below the four million dollar mark. Also 29 his contract would run for 2 seasons and allow the Maple Leafs to part ways with him at age 31. Max Domi had a better statistical year this season with 47 points on the season. He also found good chemistry within the top six for parts of the year.

If the Toronto Maple Leafs were going to offer these contracts to Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi they would be committing to the current core unless there is a trade. The more likely and safer deal will be the Max Domi deal and that is the one the Maple Leafs will likely prioritize getting done.
