Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving addressed media members following the signing of veteran forward Max Pacioretty to a tryout deal (PTO)
"We will see (what Pacioretty's role is)," Treliving said. "With Max, he is a veteran guy who has been beset by injuries in the last couple of years."
"We brought Max in probably about a month or three weeks ago for a couple of days, and he was very open to not only going through a medical exam but also getting on the ice for us to see where he is at."
Treliving revealed that Pacioretty had a chance to train this summer with the franchise, unlike previous seasons in which Pacioretty had had to just focus exclusively on rehab.
«He feels that he wasn't where he wanted to be physically last year, but this summer, he was able to have a full training regimen."
Treliving spoke on the medical evaluation and on-ice sessions for Pacioretty with the team which have been positive, and now it's about seeing how the veteran fits in the lineup during training camp.
"Our expectation is that he is going to come in and give us more depth," Treliving said. "All of that stuff is going to sort itself out in camp."
The Leafs GM emphasized, that Pacioretty will have to earn his spot and that nothing will be given to him just based on his resume.
"Everyone is competing for a job, right?" the general manager added. "You have to go through camp. My expectation is that he is going to be with us, but everyone has to earn their spot here."
Time will only tell for Pacioretty and the Leafs to as if this will be a good fit for both player and organization.
