The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a busy NHL offseason, and GM Brad Treliving has yet another issue on his plate. Solving the salary cap situation.

The health of their new defenseman, Jani Hakanpaa, is now a concern. Hakanpaa agreed to a two-year, $3M deal, but he might never play again due to injuries.
96 hours ago I had no idea what kind of pokemon a Jani Hakanpaa was.

Now I badly need to know whether his knees are bone dust or not.
If Hakanpaa lands on the long-term injured list, his cap hit would come off the books and it could impact the future of goaltender Matt Murray, who didn't play at all last year due to injuries of his own. Murray could be placed on waivers, potentially freeing up space for the Leafs to add a forward or two.
If TOR would sneak Murray through waivers & place Hakanpaa on LTIR, if he can't play, TOR would have just under $6M in cap space to work with to address two final forward spots.
With the team currently $1.6M over the cap and one player past the 23 man limit, every penny counts.
