The Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Joel Edmundson revealed what he plans to do next season as he enters the summer looking for a new contract.
Acquired at the last trade deadline by Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving for two draft picks (3rd round in 2024 and 5th round in 2025), Edmundson spent most of his time in Toronto on the Injury Reserve. He ended up playing nine games in the regular season and seven in the playoffs, scoring an assist in that time.
His defensive abilities were of great use for the Leafs in the playoffs, and the organization expressed interest in bringing him back next season. Unfortunately for them, a new report suggests that the defenseman plans on testing the free agent market on July 1st.
"The Leafs have also expressed interest in re-signing Joel Edmundson, however, I'm told the rugged defenseman plans on testing free agency next month. He is open to returning to Toronto, but he wants to explore his options before deciding his future."
He's open to staying in Toronto, but they'll have to make an offer he can't refuse. A reliable player such as Edmundson will certainly generate interest across the NHL and should get a few offers on the market.
Do you think Joel Edmundson will stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs next season?
