One of the Maple Leafs biggest moves this summer was to ink a deal with respected enforcer Ryan Reaves, and while the deal looked like a bad one on paper, he brings a level of toughness that the Leafs haven't had for a long time.

Waivers incoming?

Given that he carries a $1.35 AAV on his contract and the Leafs are right at the salary cap, it has now been reported that Ryan Reaves could face waivers early in the season in order to give the Leafs some flexibility.
While there's several waiver exempt players that could be moved down, none carry the cap hit that Ryan Reaves does, but fortunately for the Leafs, most teams in the NHL are nearly in the same predicament, so it's unlikely he gets claimed.

A strong presence

While Ryan Reaves has tallied just 59 goals and 129 points in 828 games of action in the NHL, he brings so much more to the table, and is expected to be a major part of their fourth line in 2023-24.
Over his 13-years in the NHL, Ryan Reaves has been in the penalty box for over 1,000 minutes, and while the league has restricted the physical style in the NHL, they're hoping that come playoff time he can be a major difference.
