It's been over 16 years since Toronto Maple Leafs fans briefly turned on Mats Sundin back in 2008 when he opted to stay put despite trade talks.
Fast forward to today, and the spotlight's now on Mitch Marner, who's been granted some trade protection by the Leafs.
Mitch, even more prolific than Sundin in the regular season, has yet to deliver the goods in the playoffs. And despite his poor postseason performance, he's got a full no-move clause, something even Auston Matthews and William Nylander didn't get in their new contracts.
Now, with the Leafs likely needing Marner's help, they might have to ask him to waive that no-move clause, just like they did with Sundin. Yet chances are, Marner will choose to stay put until his contract expires next summer, just like Sundin did all those years ago.

If Marner and the Leafs' core enjoy playing together, they'll likely tough it out for another season, playoffs and all. And unless there's any disdain toward their new coach, Craig Berube, they'll probably stick around.
It's more likely Marner will have a breakout contract year before exploring his options in free agency. And with his $11 million price tag, the Leafs might just have to watch him go.
