Sportsnet reporter unveils likelihood of a John Tavares extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs recently stripped John Tavares of the captaincy, but it appears he may ultimately remain with the team as a free agent.
For Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs, there are some huge decisions to make in the coming years, most notably with both Mitch Marner and John Tavares set to hit free agency in the off-season of 2025. While Marner has been engulfed in trade rumours all summer long, there hasn't been as much said about Tavares, but now, Sportsnet's Luke Fox has recently revealed the latest on a potential new deal for the former captain.
''I think it's much more likely that he re-signs at this stage than Marner does, "Fox began. "I do think it's possible, and I do think his willingness to take one for the team and be okay with the captaincy -- I mean, it wasn't his idea, let's be clear -- but he came around the idea and publicly was fully on board.''
Some fans may have expected Tavares to be bitter about the captaincy situation, but ultimately it appears he's taking it in stride, and given how much he wants to win in Toronto, it's no surprise that he may be flexible in a return to the Maple Leafs.
''Like, he wants to win. He's fine financially, so I think he'll be willing to take a haircut. I'm not saying he's taking 800,000, but he'll take a haircut if it means staying on.''
It's unclear what the market would be for the 33-year old, but he's still a very productive player, and even though he wants to return to Toronto, he may potentially find some much more lucrative offers if he explores the free agent market. Ultimately, with the team needing center depth, he remains one of the best options for Craig Berube and this team, so while Marner's situation may be a bit more explosive, leading to a potential trade, look for Tavares to try and make things work in Toronto.
