The hockey community has unfortunately lost another NHL alumni after it was announced that former Habs defenseman Larry Trader has passed away at age 61.

Larry Trader got his start in hockey with the Gloucester Rangers in the CJHL for the 1979-1980 season before joining the London Knights in the OHL for the next three. He was soon after selected in the fifth round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft in the 86th spot overall by the Detroit Red Wings. Despite only playing 91 games in the league, he made a big presence in the AHL winning a Calder Cup with the Adirondack Red Wings. Following some time playing in Austria and Italy he coached for several years. Sadly, reports have confirmed that Larry Trader has left us at the age of 61.

"The NHL Alumni Association is saddened to learn that Larry Trader has passed away at the age of 61.

Larry was drafted in the 5th round of the 1981 Entry Draft to the @detroitredwings. He played two seasons with the team before moving on to the @stlouisblues, and finishing his NHL career with the @canadiensmtl. In total, Larry played in 91 regular-season games, scoring 18 points.

Trader's hockey career also took him to the OHL, AHL (where he won the Calder Cup with the Adirondack Red Wings), Austria, and Italy before his retirement where he coached teams in Ontario, Canada.

Larry was loved by all those who met him, with his positive energy and quick wit, he could make anyone smile.

We send our deepest condolences to Larry's family, friends, and former teammates during this difficult time."

Larry Trader played in the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings, the St. Louis Blues, and the Montreal Canadiens before he left the league after the 1987-88 season, scoring 5 goals and 18 points across his career. We hope you can join us in wishing the best for all his friends and family through this difficult situation. In the meantime, you can watch him make an appearance for the Habs in his last NHL season during a regular season game against the Hartford Whalers.
"Denine races for the puck and he won't break away because Larry Trader knocked the puck to the corner. Nice play by the seldom-used defenseman Larry Trader. Been riding the Pines many nights recently"
