This is extremely surprising considering that the NHL has stated they are not in heavily expanding just yet, considering the success of their previous additions, such as the Vegas Golden Knights who managed to win the coveted Stanley Cup last season.
When considering that there are only a mere 2 out of the 32 franchises in the NHL that are valued at 2 billion plus dollars, this is a shockingly unreasonable and absurd price point.
To prominent and rich figures like Bettman, this may not seem like a substantial amount, but it most definitely is and he could effectively be sabotaging any plans the NHL may have to expand further in the future.
While this certainly isn't a pressing matter that demands any immediate attention as the NHL won't be adding a new franchise for quite awhile, it's still an issue to keep an eye on and observe what happens as time passes.
The Seattle kraken, the most recent adition to the NHL, has an expansion fee of 650 million, so 2 billion really seems like a stretch when you compare it to Seattle. Hopefully, the backlash to this will be strong enough to have this number decrease, but until then, we'll just have to wait and see how this unfolds.
