David Alter calls for the NHL to rename the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy after the late Johnny Gaudreau

It's been two days since the Gaudreau tragedy took place in New Jersey, and members of the hockey community are already proposing ways to honor Johnny Hockey's legacy.

Some believe that the Calgary Flames and/or the Columbus Blue Jackets should retire Gaudreau's number, but another idea is gaining traction on social media.

David Alter revealed that he believes the NHL should rename the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy after Johnny Gaudreau.

After all, not only was it the only trophy that Gaudreau won in his career, but it could also bring back some glory to the award, as there's a shared feeling that it has lost some of its significance in recent years.

The Lady Byng, given to the player demonstrating sportsmanship, skill, and gentlemanly conduct, has been part of the NHL for 100 years and was originally named after a Viscount's wife.

Naming it the Johnny Gaudreau Trophy would surely be special for players, who could truly grasp the significance of the award, bringing it back to its former glory. In recent years, members of the media have been voting for the player with the fewest penalties in the season, and if it were named after Gaudreau, they would likely give more thought to the meaning of the award before making their choice.
