Captain of the Fort Erie Meteors Rylan Masterson has opened a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA, and is hoping others will join him.

The young Canadian hockey player has started this class-action lawsuit against the NCAA for violation of anti-trust laws. In the suit, it is claiming the NCAA is stopping anyone who has played for a major junior team from being eligible to enter the US College Hockey System.
It was back in 2022 that Masterson played two games for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). That has now cost him his eligibility per the NCAA rules.
"Plaintiff Rylan Masterson is a resident and citizen of Fort Erie, Ontario. In 2022, when he was sixteen years old, he played two exhibition games for the Windsor Spitfires of the Canadian Hockey League ("CHL") and, as a result of the illegal conspiracy in violation of the U.S. antitrust laws alleged herein, lost his eligibility to play Division I hockey for any institution that is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association ("NCAA"). Plaintiff, individually and on behalf of a class of hockey players (defined below), brings this action against the NCAA, Canisius University, Niagara University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Boston College, Boston
University, University of Denver, Quinnipiac University, University of Notre Dame du Lac, Stonehill College, and University of St. Thomas."
Rick Westhead of TSN explains that in 2023 the Division I coaches had the option to opt out of this boycott, but there were not enough votes for that to happen.
Masterson became team captain of the Meteors for the start of the 2023-24 season in which they won a championship.
Masterson does not have a trial or any word of a date as of yet for one. The rules have been in place for a long time in the NCAA and are very well known in the hockey world. If this case does get to a jury as requested by Masterson, and rules in his favor, this could have major implications in hockey coming soon.
