After a solid campaign that saw the Florida Panthers go deep in the playoffs, veteran defenseman Radko Gudas made headlines this summer when he opted to sign a three-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks.

A physical presence

The 33-year old was solid again in 72 games this past season, posting 2 goals and 17 assists, and after his play in the post-season, it was clear he was drawing plenty of interest as a free agent.
Gudas has already outlined turning down several Canadian teams due to the media and fan pressure and scrutiny, but now, he has gone even further on those comments, claiming a certain policy held him back from going to Canada too.

No interest in Canada

This week, Gudas elaborated on those comments in an interview with iSport, claiming that the higher tax rate was a major reason he chose California, even if the Ducks are a long way from being a contender.
In Canada, you also start with taxes at more than fifty percent. You can't say that California is different in this regard. It has thirteen percent higher taxes than Florida.

At this point, most people have come to terms with his criticism of Canadian markets, but this is another great insight into why players often shun Canada in favour of American markets, perhaps explaining the almost 30-year Stanley Cup drought.
