Alex Galchenyuk was arrested in July and charged with six different counts after an altercation with a police officer. He was then released from the Arizona Coyotes shortly after. Today we learned his sentence and what it means for Galchenyuk in the coming months.
Galchenyuk Sentenced
Today Alex Galchenyuk took a plea deal in his case. This meant that 5 of his 6 charges were dismissed.
Update: According to sentencing documents, five of the charges against Alex Galchenyuk were dismissed; he pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor threatening charge.
He was sentenced on one count of misdemeanor threatening. This led to a sentence of 30 days in jail with 27 suspended.
According to those documents, Galchenyuk was sentenced to 30 days of jail time, one of which counts as time served and 27 of which will be suspended upon successful completion of an alcohol recovery program and 12 months without consuming/possessing alcohol.
Galchenyuk will also have to refrain from consuming or possessing alcohol over the next 12 months. He will then finally have to complete an alcohol recovery program.
Galchenyuk's Next Steps
Alex Galchenyuk has already put out a statement about taking responsibility for his actions. He also has checked himself into a treatment program. As far as hockey goes Galchenyuk is without a team. It is unclear how his current sentence will impact his potential next move in his career. There are rumors of several KHL teams being interested in his services once he is back to playing.
