The Boston Bruins' season concluded in a rather anticlimactic fashion. Following a year filled with notable achievements, the Massachusetts-based club found themselves ousted from the playoffs' initial round by the 8th seed Florida Panthers.

Despite initially leading the series 3-1, they were eventually defeated in a full seven-game run.

The Sunset of Bergeron and Krejci's Careers?

This premature playoff exit may symbolize more than a single season's disappointment. It could very well be the final chance for Bruins stalwarts Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci to lift the Stanley Cup.
The emotional scenes that followed game 7, where the Bruins' captain was embraced by each of his teammates, seemed to hint at the close of Bergeron's illustrious career.

Uncertainty Surrounding Bergeron's Future

While Patrice Bergeron has yet to make a firm decision on his future, the Boston Bruins' General Manager (GM), Don Sweeney, expressed his concerns in a public statement. He declared:
«We still have to hear a final word from David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron. We'll keep our fingers crossed.»

The Road Ahead for The Bruins

Should Bergeron and Krejci choose to end their hockey careers, the Bruins would have a lot of rebuilding to do.

The departure of Taylor Hall, who displayed outstanding performance during the playoffs, has already left a void in the team. Add to that the fact that the team's nucleus is not getting any younger.
To maintain their Stanley Cup contender status, Sweeney would need to recruit centers that are on Bergeron's level into the Bruins' ranks.
