Jeff Skinner has been a key player for the Buffalo Sabres, but as the team looks to chart a new course towards success, it seems they're considering a significant move that might involve buying out the veteran forward.

In recent years, the Sabres have shown glimpses of promise with their young, up-and-coming core, yet the desired results have been elusive. Looking ahead to this summer's free agency, there's buzz suggesting the team is eyeing major roster upgrades, potentially funded by a buy-out of Jeff Skinner's contract.
According to Jeff Marek & Elliotte Friedman on TJMS, there is word that a Jeff Skinner buyout is a real possibility this offseason.
Skinner, who signed an eight-year, $72 million deal back in 2019, still has three years left on his contract. While he had strong seasons in 2021 and 2022 with 63 and 82 points respectively, his production dipped in 2023.
With each passing year, concerns over his age and potential decline are growing, prompting the Sabres to contemplate parting ways before his performance further declines.
Skinner is:

- A very efficient goal-scorer
- A strong chance creator, especially off the rush
- An inconsistent playmaker
- Not much of a puck carrier
- An agile but not fast skater
- Uninvolved defensively and on the forecheck with next to no physicality
Details on whether Skinner has been consulted or when exactly a buy-out might occur remain unclear. However, signs point to Buffalo preparing to move on from Skinner sooner rather than later. Stay tuned as this situation continues to develop.
