Longtime Team GM Let Go In Major Move

The Columbus Blue Jackets have relieved General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen of his duties, the team announced.
Blue Jackets President of Hockey Operations John Davidson will take over General Manager duties in the interim for Columbus as the team seeks a replacement for Kekalainen.
«This is one of the hardest days I have had in my career as Jarmo is a friend, someone I have a great deal of respect for and someone who has done a lot of good things during his time here. While the future of our club is bright, our performance has not been good enough and it is time for a fresh perspective as we move forward.», Davidson said in a statement.

Kekalainen, the first European GM in NHL history, was named to the position for the Blue Jackets in 2013, the third longest reigning GM in the NHL behind Doug Armstrong of St. Louis and Kevin Cheveldaynoff of Winnipeg.
The 57-year-old Kekalainen led Columbus to five playoff appearances, and was apart of the team's draft successes with players such as Oliver Bjorkstrand, Elvis Merzlikins, Zach Werenski & Pierre-Luc Dubois, as well as major trades for key stars in Artemi Panarin, Sergei Bobrovsky & Nick Foligno.
John Davidson will address media at 11:30 a.m. ET (8:30 a.m. PT)
