The NHL hasn't seen a player like Sean Avery since he retired from the NHL, and his latest story is one that won't shock anyone that knows Avery.

Over the history of the NHL, there have been many huge personalities in the league, but in the past 20 years, there have been none like Sean Avery, who always drew plenty of controversy, especially in 2005 with the Los Angeles Kings where he tallied an incredible 257 penalty minutes on the year. Now, the former enforcer has become a media personality with his own podcast, and through a media member conducting a poll, we know what the first thing he bought with his first NHL pay cheque was;
"An ounce of mushrooms"

That's certainly not a PG answer, and one that wouldn't be accepted in the NHL today, but back in 2001/02 when he broke in with the Detroit Red Wings, this unsurprisingly would be the norm in an NHL locker room. In 580 games over the course of his career, Avery would tally 247 points as well as an astounding 1,533 penalty minutes, an average of more than two per game, making the 44-year old one of the league's most memorable players.
While the NHL could use a character like Avery in 2024, they certainly don't need the headaches that he would bring, and with yet another controversial answer, it's safe to say that we won't see anyone like this in the league again.
