The Oilers season is officially off the rails. After the team lost 8-1 on opening night to the Canucks many thought it was just a fluke. Now the Canucks have scored 10 in a game and the Oilers still look terrible. Was it really a fluke?

McDavid Calls Out Goalies

McDavid let out some frustration in his post-game interview today. While he did not mention the goaltending specifically, he implied it was a problem by saying that every little mistake the team makes they are getting punished for. This pretty heavily implies that the goalies are not giving the team saves when they need them to.

Oilers Goalies Living In the 80s

The numbers back this up as the main problem with the Oilers so far has been their goaltending and it is not even close. Stuart Skinner has apparently been 'better' has he's gotten six games to Campbell's four, but his numbers are horrendous. Skinner, coming off a Calder-finalist season, currently has a 1-3-1 record, a 3.62 goals-against-average and a .861 save percentage. Those numbers, aside from the record, may have been decent in 1979 but its 2023. While scoring is up compared to previous years, those numbers are still unacceptably bad. Jack Campbell has been even worse with a 1-4 record, a 4.50 goals-against-average and an .873 save percentage.
The Oilers simply cannot compete with numbers like this from both goalies. Both are playing like they are not NHL options period. If the team can't figure things out soon, one would have to imagine at least one of these goalies will not be with the team by the end of the season.
