In a shocking decision, this offseason the NHL decided to ban Pride Themed warmup jerseys. This decision came after a select few players voiced their opposition to wearing the jerseys.
McDavid Not Happy About the Decision to Ban Pride Jerseys
Connor McDavid recently made the decision to speak out against the NHL's banning of pride night, as Edmonton was one of the first teams to begin showing their support for pride via pride tape and other celebratory signals.
"I know in Edmonton, we were one of the first teams to use the Pride Tape," McDavid said. "In our dressing room, we strongly feel that hockey is for everybody. That includes the Pride Nights."
This decision also includes the ban of other themed jersey nights, such as Military Appreciation night, where it's common for teams to have camouflage-inspired warmup jerseys.
McDavid Not Only NHL Player Who Strongly Supports Pride
McDavid isn't the only star that strongly supports the Pride celebrations. In fact, it's only a select few players who voiced their opposition against wearing the celebratory jerseys. McDavid doesn't think that those players have to be a distraction either.
I don't think it had to have been a distraction, It could have been a non-issue while focusing on the good that was coming out of those nights.
If more players continue to show their support, and potentially drown out the small group who doesn't want the jerseys, then there is potential in the future for the NHL to bring Pride Nights back.
