Leon Draisaitl has just informed the Edmonton Oilers of a deadline to get a new contract signed, as he wants to avoid distractions in-season.
Edmonton Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman is actively negotiating a new contract with team star Leon Draisaitl. The latest update is that the negotiations have a firm deadline, as Draisaitl prefers not to engage in contract discussions once the season is underway, as he wants to avoid any potential distractions.
The proposed deal is an eight-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $13.5 million. Leon Draisaitl and Stan Bowman are scheduled to meet in Edmonton this week to finalize the agreement, with a completion date set for September 19th to avoid any distractions during the season. Essentially, the 19th of September is the deadline Draisaitl has given the team to get it done.
It has also been reported that, ten days after the season ended, Leon Draisaitl, along with Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard, had discussions with the Oilers' management about potentially taking less money on their next contracts to help the team build a Stanley Cup-contending roster for years to come. It will be interesting to see which of those players agreed to that, if that information ever gets revealed.
Currently earning $8.5 million per year, Leon Draisaitl has been a dominant force on the ice, recording 100 or more points in five of the last seven seasons and scoring over 50 goals in three of those. With his consistent performance as one of the top players in the world, it's only a matter of time before he receives the compensation that he feels reflects that elite status.
