The NHL had a chance to market one of their biggest stars for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, but instead, Gary Bettman decided to take a different approach.

Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals was a perfect representation of why hockey is considered one of the best sports to watch in the world, but there were many mistakes made in the lead up and during the game. Many criticized ESPN's broadcast of the entire series, and now, Gary Bettman has come under fire for his comments towards Connor McDavid during an interview with Stephen A. Smith.
During the interview, Bettman was asked about the Oilers captain, giving him the perfect chance to hype up the league's arguably most talented player of all time. Instead however, he went with this;
Question:

"Mr. Bettman, can you tell us what Connor McDavid represents for hockey, particularly today?"

Commissioner's response:

"He is a true star player. Most experts and fans believe he is the best player in the world, and he might well be... I believe he is the top scorer in the playoffs... [...]" - Gary Bettman, who also noted that the outcome of tonight's game is unpredictable.

On the surface, this may not seem like a big deal, but given how little hockey has grown in viewership and popularity, the vagueness of Bettman's answer towards one his marquee stars just shows his lack of passion to market the NHL. Given the platform of Smith on ESPN, Bettman could have got casual fans excited about the Stanley Cup Finals, but instead, he did little to hype up the event and his biggest star.
Simply put, the talent is there for the NHL to become an incredibly popular sport in North America among viewers, but until the man in charge makes some improvements, that's simply not going to happen.
