It's a theory that's floated around for years, especially since no Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup since Bettman assumed office. But that could all change on Monday night if the Oilers manage to come back from a 0-3 series deficit and defeat the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of the Finals in Sunrise.
However, Bettman didn't entertain the fan's accusation and gave him a dismissive look, clearly annoyed by the suggestion.
It's not that Bettman has anything against Canadian teams. In fact, he was the one who approved the return of the Winnipeg Jets (2.0) by relocating the Atlanta Thrashers. His decisions are based on what's best for the league as a whole, not based on nationalities or regions.
If the Oilers do win on Monday night and lift the Cup, Bettman will undoubtedly be there to present it to them with pride. Perhaps seeing Bettman award the Cup to a Canadian team will finally convince the fan to give the commissioner a break.
